WOMEN'S HOUSING INITIATIVE MANITOBA

ABOUT WHIM

ABOUT

What is WHIM?

WHIM is a  Women's Housing Initiative Manitoba co-operative. The objective of WHIM is to share housing with women over 50 - to share costs, and ideas, and be supportive to one another, while still having private space.  The concept is called co-housing.

Co-housing means sharing a house with other women that is not just a place to live.  The concept is to create a respectful environment, to learn from one another and from others, to use our knowledge and skills in a meaningful way, to be supportive of one another and to live life to the fullest.   We are open to all cultures, spiritual beliefs and sexual orientation.

Criteria for consideration

  • Women

  • Over 50

  • Interested in sharing a house, costs

  • Interested in living in a respectful and supportive environment

  • Interested in expanding their minds, contributing to the community at large in meaningful way and having fun.

Where?

A house has been renovated to accommodate this concept. It is in Winnipeg's Riverview area, across from Fisher Park and 3 blocks from Osborne St South.

The house is a 3 storey with 6 bedrooms, and an additional bedroom in the basement for guests. One bedroom on the main floor is accessible and there is a future plan for a chair lift to the second floor for greater accessibility.

There are four shared bathrooms.

On the first floor is a living room, dining room, office, large family room, kitchen and sun room.

There is a kitchen/laundry/sewing room space on the second floor.

The basement is fully finished and has a bathroom, laundry, a tool room, an exercise room and a guest room for friends and family.

Outside is a hot tub, a deck, a double garage, and a green space for gardening.

Across the street is a park with a running or walking track. On Osborne Street (walking distance) is a Safeway, library, Fort Rouge Leisure Centre with activities and exercise room, Park Theatre, 3 good restaurants and a pharmacy.

Your Stuff, My Stuff

Some people have said “But what do I do with my stuff? ”Wherever we can, we can amalgamate some of your stuff with what is here already. We would like to be able to accommodate those things that are special to you, like pictures or Great Aunt Anna’s teapot. For others, there are several storage spots in the house, but large furniture may not be accommodated. We would suggest you check out storage places until you are sure this is right for you.

Guidelines

Interested women will be met with to discuss the pros and cons and determine what is important to them to ensure that there is a match with other residents.  Guidelines will be established as a group but here are some:

  • Open to all cultures, religious beliefs and sexual orientation

  • Willing to help others

  • Willing to take on ongoing and occasional tasks to maintain space

  • Able to resolve conflict in a respectful manner

  • Support environmental measures like recycling

  • Open to kids and family who visit

  • No smoking in house or yard

  • Pets to be discussed (Some allergic to cats.)

MEMBER BIOS

Barbara

Hi. I am Barbara and a member of WHIM since June 2018.  I love the setting and find the companionship stimulating and fun loving.  I lived away from Winnipeg for many years enjoying working in several different countries as well as learning about other people and cultures.

I am a “long distance” mother of three 30+ year olds and 2 preteen grand children. I as well am a caregiver to my mother living in Winnipeg.  I'm an active member of a Christian church, participate in a Buddhist study and meditation group, practice yoga, and am a fair weather bike rider. I especially enjoy walking Jersey, Katherine's dog.

I look forward to joining a local community gardening group and becoming more involved in social justice issues.

WHIM is a supportive lively environment where we are encouraged to be inclusive and involved community members. I find living here an enriching experience.

Lynda

Hi. My name is Lynda.  I am a Mom and grandma to a smiley baby boy and a  5 year old girl.  I’m a vegetarian leaning towards veganism but  trying hard not to be a pain in the butt.  On special occasions I have been known to eat lobster. I am retired but spend much of my time on issues related to climate change and social justice. My interests include travel, reading and cooking . I work out at the Reh-fit Centre every chance I get (which has more to do with maintaining my  mobility) than anything else.

Bev

Hi. My name is Bev. I still work part time doing workplace harassment investigations. I used to own the business but now I just do the occasional contract. I’ve spent most of my life working in the area of women’s equality and was involved in the start up of the birthing center, the women’s enterprise center, the Canadian women’s music festival and also Kali Shiva AIDs services.  I have seven children and 10 grandchildren who are in fact the most important part of my life, other than WHIM. I am definitely a type A person and I love to be part of the community. I am very comfortable living here at WHIM I find that I learn something new every day.  I can be as involved in different things as much as  I want to be but still have my privacy too.

Sherry

I joined the house in the summer of 2020. I have always thought that a group of like minded women living together was the best concept. Although several of the ladies work outside the home, there is always someone to chat with and share ideas and recipes. We all take turns cooking one night a week. I have learned to follow a recipe and also learned to cook for 6 not 1. I have never enjoyed eating alone so now I never do.

Being a single parent for many, many years I had my Son and Daughter to keep me going. Once they grew up and moved away it was just me and my dog; and a couple of cats. At one point I thought it best to sell my house and move into a rental. I found that renting an apartment was lonely and costly. A friend of mine heard about WHIM and suggested I contact them. I am so happy I did.

I am eating better, exercising, working part time, and get to meet wonderful people. Growing up as an only child I did not have sisters; now I have five. We live across from a beautiful park and the whole neighbourhood has gorgeous trees and homes. My grandchildren live close by and I am so fortunate to often spend time with them. My family and friends are always welcome to visit me in my new home.

SEE & DO

ACTIVITIES
(everything is always optional)

Whether we're having a Truth and Reconciliation Event, meeting together for the women's soccer finals, hosting Home Routes concerts, handing out candy in costume for Halloween or planning a Murder Mystery Dinner Party we are forever laughing and having a good time.

New Year's Evening Dinner

This year was brought in at WHIM with a Greek dinner for 13. We all shared a song or poem or scripture to instill discussion.  Previous years we have hosted other cultural dinners such as a Mexican fiesta. Of course the hot tub has an all season appeal.

Group Fitness

Fitness is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, particularly as we age. For those who would like to do some stretching, we like to meet a few times a week for some group stretching.

Evenings

On nights when we are not busy we choose from a variety of options - mindless TV, movies, games, quiet reading, baking or whatever strikes your fancy.

Write for Rights

with Amnesty International

WHIM supports Social Justice. The weekend closest to Human Rights Day we open our house inviting people to write letters on behalf of those unjustly incarcerated. A representative from Amnesty International joins us in this effort. We have sent out as many as 65 letters in one evening.

Annual Lobster Party

Over the years our annual Lobster Party has evolved into a lobster and salmon party.  This event happens in August where we order our lobsters from Nova Scotia. Other  delectable treats involve special salads and desserts and we never forget the wine which we never run out of. A local poet always attends and reads from his book

Daily Dinners

We each cook once a week. Some of us are meat eaters and some are vegetarian. Keeping all of us in mind the most terrific dinners come to the table.  We learn from each other and we really appreciate coming home to a meal after a busy day.
